Downlights are a popular lighting choice for apartments, houses, and commercial businesses alike. Downlights tend to be very convenient, affordable and unobtrusive ceiling lights and many are admired for their sleek and modern appearance.

LED, Halogen or Fluorescent?
The type of globe you want is the most important decision you'll make when you go to buy downlights. If you're looking for energy efficient downlights, you should narrow your choice down to either LED downlights or compact fluorescent (CFL) downlights. These two options will cost you more upfront, but will last much longer than the alternative and will allow you to save significantly on power bills if you're switching from a traditional incandescent globe.

But if the quality of the light produced is your biggest concern, it's hard to beat halogen downlights. Halogen gives off a bright, white light that is excellent for task lighting, for example in the kitchen. Retail stores also prefer halogen downlights for showcasing their products. However, halogen downlights operate at very high temperatures, resulting in higher electricity bills. These downlights can also be a fire hazard if not installed properly, so be sure to hire a licensed electrician to install them.

12V vs. 240V Downlights
You'll find that downlights are available in two standard voltages: 12V (also known as low voltage downlights) and 240V (line voltage). There is no "best" option, but depending on your situation you may prefer one over the other.

12V downlights are wired to a transformer, and that transformer is wired to the mains supply. Approximately 10% of the power is lost through the use of this transformer, but these low voltage downlights tend to produce a brighter, whiter light than the 240V downlights. In comparison, 240V downlights are wired directly to the mains supply - these downlights are generally cheaper and easier to install.

The bottom line is that if you plan to install your downlights in a room that requires very good lighting, like a kitchen or bathroom, the 12V downlights are probably most suited to your situation. In other areas of the house 240V downlights should be more than adequate.

To Dim Or Not To Dim?
Many people prefer to buy dimmable downlights, which allow you to create beautiful mood lighting. If this is an extra that really appeals to you, your best bet is to stick with either LED downlights or halogen downlights. Some CFL downlights are now offering a dimmable option, but these lights are harder to find and the way that CFL downlights produce light make them less ideal for dimming.
